Our results-driven and effective iCan! Learn Program will be returning soon! Over the past 7 years we have continued to refine and improve our program with our partners at the UCF College of Community Innovation and Education and the Toni Jennings Exceptional Education Institute. The program is designed to supplement traditional education by teaching reading and math skills needed to strengthen the educational potential for children with Down syndrome, regardless of their formal educational setting. (We are taking a little break this year since we cannot meet on the UCF campus, however, we are still working with the team to determine how to best support families during Covid.)
Children and parents attend simultaneous monthly sessions, which focus on skill development for literacy, math, language, and fine motor skills. We will continue to expand upon our STEM based programming to prepare kids for the future. This approach not only teaches them problem solving, following directions and trial and error - the concepts, vocabulary and tools they learn are useful across many disciplines and classroom situations. All students, new or returning to the program, will work at their appropriate level.
The modules we are offering this year are designed for children ages 4-9. The participant must be 4 by September 1st each year and must be under 10 by September 1st.
Classes are held at UCF from 9:00 am - 11:00 am. (Please plan to arrive by 8:45 am to include time for on-campus parking and classroom drop-off time for children.) A parent or guardian and the child are expected to be in class every month.
The cost of the program is $25 per month plus a $50 registration fee for families who have their child attending with them. The registration fee will be waived if you pay for the full program in advance. The cost of the program covers all materials for the class and home, along with the monthly sessions.
The parent component of the program will be taught by UCF Faculty, Doctoral Candidates, guest speakers and the student's component will be taught by UCF Graduate students from the College of Community Innovation and Education, the Toni Jennings Exceptional Education Institute and professional community partners (OT / Speech). There will also be an ABA onsite for each class.
