The FOUNDATION is thrilled to once again partner with UCF to offer another year of the College and Career Prep Program. We consider this our 'Young Adult Boot Camp' because this series of classes will teach skills necessary to navigate life as a college student - or successful young adult - in the community. Participants will meet at the Morgridge International Reading Center (MIRC) on the UCF Campus one Saturday a month from 9:30am - 11:30am to learn about and experience some of the opportunities and responsibilities that come with entering adulthood and college life. We know not everyone wants to go to college, but we also believe "you don't know what you don't know!" We want to give our members the opportunity to see if college could be a fit and learn some real-life skills that will help them be more independent and successful in the community.
Parents and guardians of participants informally meet in the Teaching Academy next door during class time, to discuss ways to facilitate learning and independence, ideas to encourage and support their loved ones, and strategies to help continue their growth into productive and successful adults.
Some of these topics will include:
· Housing options for both on and off campus.
· Financial planning.
· SSI.
· VR Vendors.
Students will get to experience the following:
· IT vision day.
· Teach live.
· A college day for parents and students.
· And MORE!
We are proud to offer this exceptional learning opportunity in conjunction with the UCF College of Community Innovation and Education and the Toni Jennings Exceptional Education Institute.
The program is not ability-based and open to all individuals who are 16 and older who want to continue to learn as they move forward in life. This program is not restricted to individuals with Down syndrome.
