iCan Learn! Early reading and math skills.....

iCan Learn!

Our very successful iCan Learn! Program is taking on a new format starting the fall of 2017!  Over the past 3 years we have continued to refine and improve our program with our partners at the UCF College of Education and Human Performance and the Toni Jennings Exceptional Education Institute.  The program is designed to supplement traditional education by teaching reading and math skills needed to strengthen the educational potential for children with Down syndrome, regardless of their formal educational setting.

This fall we will be replacing traditional math with a STEM (science technology engineering and math) program with DASH the Robot. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are shaping the future of education and curriculum. The prospects of robotics, computer programing, and engineering combine the fields of mathematics, technology, and language arts to open new worlds and experiences for today’s students. This year we will embark on a journey to actively learn robotics and programming, intertwining science, mathematics, reading, speech and language, occupational, and physical therapies. Participants will learn about the vast ocean and its amazing array of animals, while learning the constructs of robotics using the Dash robot by WonderWorkshop.

In addition to the great student programming, the monthly programs will arm parents to serve as capable advocates for their children in the educational process by attending monthly instructional sessions on topics such as:

• Teaching Your Child To Read
• Introduction To Math and Coding
• Creating An Effective Learning Session

Children and parents attend simultaneous monthly sessions, which focus on skill development for literacy, math, language, and fine motor skills.

The modules we are offering this year are designed for children ages 5-9. The participant must be 5 by September 1, 2017 and must be age 9 through June 1, 2018 (they should not turn 10 before June 1).

Classes will be held at UCF from 9:15 am - 11:00 am. (Please plan to arrive by 9:00 am to include time for on-campus parking and classroom drop-off time for children.)  A parent or guardian and the child are expected to be in class every month.

The cost of the program is $25 per month plus a $50 registration fee for families who have their child attending with them. The registration fee will be waived if you pay for the full program in advance.  Monthly payments will be required to provide post-dated checks or a credit card which will be charged monthly for your participation.  The cost of the program covers all materials for the class and home, along with the monthly sessions.

The parent component of the program will be taught by UCF Faculty & Doctoral Candidates and the student's component will be taught by UCF Graduate students from the College of Education and Human Performance, the Toni Jennings Exceptional Education Institute and professional community partners (OT / Speech).

If you have questions about the program, please contact Tina Mundelein at Tina.Mundelein@DSFFlorida.org.

*100% participation is key, so please check the dates before registering. Participants with 100% attendance will receive DASH Robot at the end of our sessions!  How fun!
